From New York with Love – Marble and Milkweed Rose and Chamomile Honey Clay Cleanser (Review)

|

Since starting my skincare journey, I find that I have deviated away from those big name brands and started to appreciate smaller and niche skincare labels. In discovering these smaller and niche brands I have also discovered a new appreciation for independent ‘small batch’ skincare brands that make their products by hand in smaller batches. One such brand that caught my eye not too long ago was a brand from New York, Marble and Milkweed, in which I wrote briefly about in this Skincare Discoveries post

The thing that caught my eye about Marble and Milkweed is the fact that the owner, formulator and creator, Briar has such a passion with the ingredients she uses in all of her products. She loves working with plants (and this is so easily seen in her Instagram) and also loves educating the New York community about plants, native flora and fauna and this can be seen through her work with The Butterfly Project, an organisation that aims to educate and promote the importance of the preservation of plants in urban spaces. Briar uses the most beautiful plant based ingredients in her skincare such as rose, chamomile, cardamon, green tea, jasmine, just to name a few dreamy ingredients and did I mention that she also creates her own tea as well? It is so obvious that the lovely Briar has such an affinity and passion with nature, plants and plant based skincare and this can be seen throughout all of her beautifully delicate sounding formulations in the Marble and Milkweed range.

When a few months ago, Briar contacted me to see if I wanted to try anything from the brand, I picked the Rose and Chamomile Honey Clay Cleanser as I thought the formulation sounded incredibly dreamy, special and indulgent. I am so grateful for her generosity and her willingness to share this creation with me, as I have found the cleanser so wonderful to use!

***This cleanser was sent to me by the lovely Briar as a gift, however there were no expectations for a review of this. I wrote one because I genuinely do enjoy using this and with anything that I enjoy using, I just have to share! All of my opinions are my own honest thoughts and opinions in this review.

What Is It?
The Marble and Milkweed Rose and Chamomile Honey Clay Cleanser is a gentle and lush facial cleanser that acts purify, balance and clean the skin.

What Does It Do?
This cleanser aims to give the skin a deep yet gentle cleanse whilst still maintaining the skin’s natural balance. It uses ingredients such as natural humectant and anti-bacterial raw honey, purifying clays and soothing and calming botanical extracts such as rose and chamomile (from the name) to nourish as well as clean the skin. It can also be used as a face mask as well.

Ingredients:

Local raw honey, *sunflower oil infused with *calendula & *marshmallow root, bentonite clay, white kaolin clay, rose kaolin clay, *sesame oil, *rosehip seed oil, essences of *rose otto, *rose geranium & *german chamomile, local beeswax, non-gmo vitamin e
(*organic)

My Thoughts:
I have been using the Marble and Milkweed Honey Clay Cleanser for a few months now and I have really been enjoying using this as a second cleanser. I find that it is an incredibly nourishing and gentle cleanser that cleans my skin well, leaving it softer, nourished and balanced. There is no doubt that this cleanser, reminds me very much of May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud in terms of the fact that both formulations use honey and clay as the base of the cleanser. However, I find that the Marble and Milkweed cleanser to be thicker in its consistency, slightly more sticky and not as ‘creamy’ looking and I also find it is a little easier to ‘work’ into the face. It also helps that the price point of this cleanser is a little easier to digest in comparison to May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud as it is priced at USD $38 for a 70ml jar.

The Honey Clay Cleanser is relatively simple in its ingredients – as mentioned earlier, it is made from raw honey, clays, nourishing oils and botanical extracts. Honey is a wonderful natural anti-bacterial as well as a natural humectant as it helps the skin to retain moisture keeping if soft and hydrated. Honey is also rich in nutrients to nourish the skin, keeping it healthy looking, soft and balanced. The Marble and Milkweed Honey Clay Cleanser also features an array of different types of clays such as bentonite clay, rose kaolin clay and white kaolin clay which acts to draw away excess sebum from the skin, purify and gently exfoliate the skin. The use of clay also helps to balance the skin as it does draw away extra dirt or oils on the skin’s surface and helps also give the skin a slightly more deeper cleanse. The use of chamomile in this cleanser helps to soothe the skin as chamomile is a well known skin calming botanical as it considered to an anti-inflammatory and is ultra calming and soothing, whilst the use of rose helps to keep the skin hydrated and calm as well. The mixture of these three key ingredients, make the honey clay cleanser a wonderful all round cleanser for most skin types and it is just jam packed with nourishing, skin loving ingredients. This cleanser also contains carrier oils such as rosehip seed oil and sesame seed oil which are packed with fatty acids, antioxidants and are great for skin repairing. I feel that each and everyone of the ingredients in the cleanser, plays a role in its formulation and there is a reason for it being there and it isn’t there ‘just because’.

I love using the Marble and Milkweed Honey Clay Cleanser as a second cleanser (it is not a great cleanser to remove make up) or as a morning cleanser as it leaves the skin feeling nourished, clean, super soft and plump. Its actually a real pleasure to use this in the evening after a stressful day as the smell of this is just so calming, relaxing and in a word, beautiful. When applying the Honey Clay cleanser, I find that it is quite easy to work with, as it feels silky smooth when applied on to damp skin and I do like to massage this into my face for a more indulgent cleansing ritual. This does wash off reasonably well with just warm water as I find it does emulsify quite well without a residue, but I do prefer to use this with a cloth. The result I get from using this is an extremely happy, clean and radiant complexion as it reduces any redness, cleans a little more deeper due to the use of clay and leaves my skin baby soft from the combination of nourishing oils such as rosehip seed oil and sesame seed oil, as well as the use of rose and chamomile. This doesn’t dry out or irritate my skin, but instead acts to calm it down and I find helps the skin to retain more moisture, most likely due to the fact it has such a high content of raw honey. I don’t find that this in any way strips my skin of any oils, but instead helps my skin to maintain that balance as it feels ultra soft after I have removed this and it feels and looks clean, radiant and hydrated. All in all, this cleanser keeps all its promises in terms of cleansing the skin deeply and keeping the skin’s natural balance.

As mentioned earlier, the Marble and Milkweed Rose and Chamomile Honey Clay Cleanser has a scent. It has a beautiful delicate floral (from the rose and chamomile) scent with a hint of honey which is such an easy scent to digest as it isn’t so overpowering. I personally find it quite calming and it is by far one of my favourites scents from all of my cleansers. Whilst there are no artificial fragrances, this cleanser does contain botanical extracts so if you are sensitive to certain smells, please bear this in mind. I however find the scent of this incredibly pleasing, beautiful (its like walking through a rose garden), delicate and so soft. The texture of this cleanser is thick and slightly more sticky as it’s main ingredient is honey. From what I have learned with any honey based cleanser, it is important to apply this on to damp skin and rubbing it between damp hands for it to be easily worked into the skin. The elegant dark miron jar packaging can be a bit a of pain for some people and I do suggest to use with with a clean spatula or spoon.

Overall, I have really enjoyed using the Marble and Milkweed Rose and Chamomile Honey Clay Cleanser as it works so well as part of an indulgent cleansing routine, leaving the skin feeling soft, calm and most importantly clean. The delicate smell of this cleanser just adds a wonderful calming feeling to any skincare ritual and it is such a pleasure to use. What I do love about this cleanser is that it much more affordable than other honey and clay based cleansers out there and it works just as well to clean and nourish the face. The ingredients list may not be as lengthy, but every single ingredient plays a vital role and every ingredient counts in the way the cleanser works. It is a wonderful addition for anyone who loves the cleansing part of a skincare routine as the smell, feeling and the ‘ritual’ for applying this is most enjoyable and so incredibly relaxing.

Repurchase YAY or NAY:
This was gifted to be but I would definitely repurchase this again as I do think it’s an extremely well priced honey and clay based cleanser and I don’t feel so guilty when I use this as a cleanser. I love the way this leaves my skin looking and feeling and I just can’t get over how lovely the scent is. It is a great all round cleanser for most skin types and it really is such an enjoyable experience using it from the smell, texture and overall result I get on my skin.

The Marble and Milkweed Rose and Chamomile Honey Clay Cleanser can be purchased directly from Marble and Milkweed for USD$38.00 for a 70ml pot (or USD$8.00 for a small 10ml pot). Those in Australia can also purchase this from the Lab Organics for AUD$59.95 for the 70ml jar.

Have you used any products from Marble and Milkweed or any other small batch skincare brands? What were your experiences and do you have any favourites? I would love for you to share your stories in the comments section below!
