An Experience to Indulge the Senses – May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud (Review)

|

May Lindstrom Skin has forever been one of those brands that I have heard rave reviews about and have always wanted to try. However, I was too afraid to take the plunge due to not having access to samples and of course the higher price tag/risk of not working out. It is one of those brands that your often hear those in the beauty and skincare community rave on about and it has developed quite a cult following. Skincare guru – Caroline Hirons, last year included May’s The Blue Cocoon in her Cultbeauty Box of Dreams and I see at least one May Lindstrom product in the skincare stashes of the skincare obsessed community on my Instagram almost daily. Recently, after much deliberation (and taking advantage of the fact I was meeting my mother in Vietnam) I finally decided to take the plunge and purchased The Honey Mud Cleansing Silk. I am so incredibly pleased that I did as this product completely won me over at first sight, smell and touch.

The Honey Mud is in no way for the person who is on the go and wants a quick routine – like many of May’s beautiful sounding products – it is a ritual in itself. The Honey Mud is a truly unique product for me, not only because it can be used as both a cleanser and a mask but it truly utilises and indulges many of your senses, its quite the experience! It engages your sight from the beautiful miron glass jar packaging, that amazing smell from the honey and the botanical oils and lastly that luxurious pudding like feel of the product make it such a delight and treat to use.

What Is It:
The Honey Mud is described as a cleansing silk (basically a cleanser) which has a creamy clay like pudding texture. It boasts beautiful (and powerful ingredients) such as honey, clay and botanical oils in its unique formulation.

What Does It Do:
The Honey Mud is essentially an indulgent cleanser that is gentle enough to be used everyday. It combines the nourishing and antibacterial powers of raw honey, skin purifying halloysite clay and beautiful essential oils to act to protect and care for the skin. The Honey Mud acts to cleanse the skin from any impurities, dirt and pollution, works gently exfoliate the skin but most importantly it also leaves the skin feeling nourished and soft. In addition to being used a luxurious cleanser, The Honey Mud can also be used as a gentle and nourishing mask as well to leave the skin both glowing and fully hydrated.

Ingredients:
The ingredients list for the Honey Mud is as follows (taken from the May Lindstrom website):
***Raw Honey, White Halloysite Clay, *Macadamia Integrifolia (Macadamia Nut Oil), *Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Argentum Metallicum (Colloidal Silver), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Absolute) Oil, *Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, *Cananga Odorata (Ylang-Ylang) Oil, *Vanilla Planifolia (Vanilla) CO2 Total Essential Oil, *Juniperus Virginiana (Cedarwood) Oil, **Boswellia Carteri (Frankincense) Oil, **Commiphora Myrrha (Myrrh) Oil.

As you can see, the ingredients for the Honey Mud are among some of the most natural and pure ingredients, with certified organic where possible. There are no real toxic ingredients here, just all natural goodness. However, please keep in mind that some sensitive skin types may be allergic to any of the botanicals.

My Thoughts:
My thoughts on May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud Cleansing Silk is simple really…its a little pot of amazing. I absolutely love this product and the hype, the rave reviews, its all true. It truly is a beautiful, luxurious and indulgent cleanser that really does invoke many of your senses and not only does your skin feel lush after using it, you cannot also help but feel that little bit more relaxed or happier during and after using it.  What makes this product so different from every other cleanser that I own is that it can also be used as an effective mask treatment – and feels like a mask treatment as well. It really is unique hybrid product.

As mentioned earlier, I do not recommend this if you are the type of person who is constantly always in a rush. The Honey Mud is definitely a product that requires time for it to be fully enjoyed and used to its full potential. The consistency of this is very sticky (honey is the first ingredient after all) and it is quite unlike most of your traditional cleansers out there. I have read a few reviews where people haven’t liked the stickiness of the product – and to be completely fair it IS different and it does take some getting used to. However once you put this product on the face, you feel an instant calming sensation from the delicious smell (yes this smells like a sticky date pudding) and the cool feeling of the honey mixed with clay formulation. It does require a little bit more time and patience to spread this all over the face and it is quite hard to work the product through like a traditional cleanser due to the stickiness of the product. To combat this, I actually apply this all over as I would with a mask and from there will massage my face so that my skin can really soak up the goodness from this. I will then leave this on for about 5 minutes (perfect time to scan through email or messages!) and using warm water I will work through the product, gradually washing this off and with the aid of a muslin cloth, get rid of any excess residue. It will reveal a beautiful clean, healthy and purified complexion that is ready to absorb the rest of the day’s skincare routine. The beautiful smell and sticky pudding like texture makes it a perfect and indulgent way to start the day (great for a lazy Sunday) or a beautiful, relaxing way to finish off the evening.

The Honey Mud can also be used as a face mask as well due to its wonderful ingredient listing of clay and honey and sticky pudding like texture. It is a favourite way to use this product for many, and I personally do love to use this as face mask as well – especially if I have some time in the morning. As per the instructions, apply this liberally on the face and leave this on for about 15-20 minutes (I have left this on for a bit longer at times)  and rinse off with warm water. What it will reveal is a hydrated, radiant, clean complexion from the honey, the mud and the plethora of other oils in the product. My skin is noticeably more refreshed, plump and glowing after using this as a mask, like using it as a cleanser, it prepares my skin well to take in the rest of my skincare routine.

May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud is a product that is packed full of wonderful, natural ingredients for the skin. The clear star of this is the use of raw honey, which is so good for the skin as it acts as an antibacterial, a source of antioxidants and is also very soothing and moisturising for the skin. This product also features Halloysite white clay which acts to purify, detox, tighten pores and also to gently exfoliate the skin which explains why using The Honey Mud leaves such a radiant glow. Essential oils in featured in the product like Ylang Ylang act to both calm the body through its smell but also acts as an anti-inflammatory for the skin. The Honey Mud also features witch hazel which also acts as an antibacterial and is an oil that has been shown to calm down skin conditions such as acne. The chocolatey scent of the product comes from the Theobroma Cacao Oil (cocoa butter) which is well known for its powerful moisturising effects for the skin. The use of Colloidal silver (tiny silver particles which are suspended in liquid) in this is somewhat controversial, but the amount used according to May Lindstrom herself is quite minimal and is generally used as a natural preservative. The skin condition called Argyria, which is related to colloidal silver is generally caused when people consume silver like a dietary supplement over a period of time, using it topically is generally considered to be safe as it is being washed off anyway and it is like ‘wearing’ silver on your skin according to the US National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health.

The other thing I must mention is the smell. I love the smell of this. It smells like a sticky date pudding with a hint of chocolate and caramel as soon as you open the jar. As a lover of dessert, this smell goes down so well for me (and sometimes makes me very hungry for a cookie, cupcake or both) and I really do enjoy the scent of this. The smell however becomes much more complex than this, as once you really start to use the product, some of the botanical oil smells such as the ylang ylang start to show through. The Honey Mud contains a delicate layer of different scents which work so well with each other to both provide you with enjoyment but also helps you to relax and destress. Whilst there is no ‘fragrance’ added, the natural scents of the ingredients that May uses in this formulation is apparent.

I purchased this product via the wonderful ladies at IamNaturalStore, however, I would also like to mention that the customer service at May Lindstrom Skin is second to none. I really deliberated over whether or not I should purchase some of May’s products due to not being quite sure how they would react with my skin. I even took it to Instagram to hear about other’s opinions and the lovely Ellie (May Lindstrom’s Director of Care) reached out to me and contacted me offering all sorts of amazing advice and help. Coming from a luxury goods customer service background, I was completely blown away with the care and the help that Ellie provided. So thank you so much to Ellie for your amazing help – I ended up purchasing another product directly from the May Lindstrom website due to this amazing customer service.

Repurchase YAY or NAY:
May Lindtsrom’s The Honey Mud is such a pleasure to use both as a cleanser and as a mask that I will definitely be repurchasing again once my jar has run out. The unique formula, texture and use makes it a one of kind product in my skincare stash. I like to reach for this if I wish to indulge myself a little more in my skincare routine. The results are generally a clean, clear, purified and radiant complexion when used as a cleanser or the same results but more of a glowing and hydrated look when I use this as a mask. Using The Honey Mud is truly a wonderful experience for both the senses and the skin and it is one that I often look forward to having!

The Honey Mud isn’t the cheapest product on the market, it does retail for USD $80 (purchase directly from May Lindstrom), AUD $102 from IamNaturalStore or GBP £64.00 from Cultbeauty but you do get 100ml of product, if you purchase this to predominately use as a mask it is well worth it. Keep in mind that most clay masks are generally 50ml in size and with The Honey Mud you are getting double the amount, so it does work out to be almost the same. May also uses and sources the finest and purest ingredients for her products so you can be rest assured that what you are putting on your face is not only a labour of love but something of high quality.

What are your thoughts on The Honey Mud? Have you tried this before and loved it as much as I did? I would love to hear your thoughts!
