The future of beauty seems to be in product customisation as more consumers are now leaving behind the age-old idea of one size fits all in the beauty industry. As Ee Ting Ng, founder and formulator in chief of bespoke skincare brand hop & cotton agrees, "It’s fantastic that people are recognising that their skin needs are unique and that they no longer have to settle for ‘one-size-fit-all’ products". Thanks to the internet, consumers are smarter than ever. They have access to information about almost every product available on the market – all that is required is a Google search. In the ever so saturated beauty industry; consumers, more than ever, are demanding more from beauty companies. With increased competition, there is more demand for innovation - something different, a product that sets itself apart from all the others. What better way to set a product apart from the rest when it is tailor-made? A product that is unique as the of individual it was created for and targets specific concerns and needs for that person. Thanks to advancements in technology, bespoke and customisation are no longer just reserved for suits and gowns – its skin deep in our beauty products too. I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Ee Ting to find out a little bit more about tailor-made beauty and the process of creating a bespoke custom skincare product.Read More
I am huge fan of the Jordan Samuel Skin line, as many of you know I absolutely adore the Plie Treatment Cleanser and I am now almost out of my first bottle of Hydrate - Jordan's Hyaluronic Acid Serum (and have and most likely always will repurchase). When I had the opportunity to connect and have a chat with Jordan himself recently, I was pretty nervous. Why? Well he is someone whom I have a tremendous amount of respect for.
For me, Jordan is someone that is not only kind, approachable and incredibly hilarious. He is someone who is knowledgable, does his research and basically just knows what he is talking about with no BS when it comes to skincare and all things skin. This is so obvious in his Skin Talks videos on his YouTube channel. He has a lot of integrity, not only as a person, a brand but also as a business owner. The success of his brand is a testament to this, with little advertising, and a lot of word of mouth rave reviews, the Jordan Samuel Skin line has fast become a favourite for the skincare obsessed and beyond.
What sets Jordan's line - Jordan Samuel Skin from many other brands is perhaps its simplistic approach. With only 4 SKUs, Jordan's line is small and simple and it is the way he intends it to be. The less is more approach to good skin is what Jordan and his line is all about I had the amazing opportunity to pick his brain about it and learn exactly why this may be the case.Read More
An area of skincare that has always interested me is the world of cosmeceuticals whereby, the product is a cross between a cosmetic item and a pharmaceutical as they contain higher concentrations of active ingredients that are clinically proven to bring about active and physical changes in the way the skin will look and feel. Generally, cosmeceuticals have a lot of clinical evidence and trials that back its claims. When I think of cosmeceuticals, I often think of products that do contain a lot of synthetic ingredients and never would I think a line could potentially be naturally derived. I was recently proven wrong!
Not too long ago, I stumbled upon Ocinium, an Australian skincare line that prides itself on using organic and natural ingredients in combination with a high concentration active ingredients that we see often in many 'mainstream' skincare brands. These ingredients include powerhouses such as retinol, niacinamide, CoQ10, Vitamins B, C and E just to name a few. Ocinium prides itself being a brand of "organic cosmeceuticals free of the toxicity of synthetic chemicals, fragrances, sulfates, petrochemicals and parabens". The active ingredients that the line uses are predominately antioxidants that have been approved for organic certification are have also been back by science for high performing results and safety.
With this extremely interesting approach to skincare, I just had to chat to Cassandra Hilton, the founder of Ocinium and find out more about this fascinating approach. What I found was that Cassandra was just a wealth of knowledge and had such passion in organic and naturally derived skincare that showed true clinical results. She mentioned that there is a lot of skepticism in the beauty industry that 'greener' or 'cleaner' brands are not as results driven or are just marketing 'fluff'. What Cassandra has set out to do is to prove the skeptics wrong and show that natural beauty brands such as her beautiful line, Ocinium can indeed show the same powerful results as other cosmeceutical counterparts. Her brand shows that natural skincare can indeed incorporate those powerful active ingredients with beautiful botanicals to give the same if not better, high performing results.
I recently took a moment to pick Cassandra's brain on all things Ocinium, skincare related and what it takes to create a product.

There is one thing that I have really, really enjoyed about blogging - its meeting and talking to other skincare fanatics, those who are just new to skincare, start ups, shop owners and of course, the founders behind the skincare brands that many of us have grown to know and love. From these conversations, I accumulate so much wonderful knowledge, not only just about skincare and the processes behind creating products but also valuable life lessons and I have also made some wonderful friends along the way. I am always so inspired when talking to others, whether it be the passion or interest in what they are discussing with me or just the sheer amount of knowledge that some of these people hold in these particular areas.
A little while ago I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Ervina, co founder of luxury skincare brand, 5YINA. After spending a very hot afternoon in Shanghai, sipping away on possibly the most beautiful and intricate Chinese teas and discussing everything from skincare, food, family, culture and travel - I left feeling incredibly inspired by my encounter with Ervina. She was so warm, friendly and passionate but also incredibly intelligent, as her wealth of knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and local Chinese art was amazing. Ervina was kind enough to share with me some information and knowledge of TCM and also some further insight into 5YINA (which she co-founded with her classmate and good friend, the lovely Angela Chau). It was a truly wonderful experience, and one I most definitely will not forget.
For those that do not know about 5YINA, it is a luxury natural skincare line that specialises in creating seasonal skincare products that incorporate Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles, philosophies and ingredients. The range features 4 different facial oils that are to be used in accordance with the seasons (or your skin type or concern) as well as a sheet mask and a beauty balm which can be used during all seasons and most skin types. I was recently lucky enough to tear both Ervina and Angela away from their extremely busy schedules and learn a little bit more about 5YINA as a brand, Traditional Chinese Medicine, the 5YINA process and what these two amazing women have planned next for the line. The interview conducted gave me so much insight into the brand, the passion and the uniqueness of the 5YINA label that I just had to share with you all.
